Magic the Gathering: Multiple Blockers?

Alright, I've been playing Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 and one thing I've noticed is I can no longer determine how my creatures deal with multiple blockers. For example- my 4/4 first strike was killed by another 4/4 because my opponent threw a 1/1 in there as well and it died first. Is this reflecting some change in the actual rules for the new block coming out, or just an idiotic change on the part of the game developers in a misguided attempt to simplify the attacking step? The only reason I'm even bothering to ask is that it's a change from the first game and aside from that it does a fairly decent job of following the rules.
