Meaning of idiom turn an honest penny?

It means go out, work a job, and earn your money by giving an honest day's work -- don't be a slacker, don't just do the minimum in order to stay out of trouble, etc. It can also mean doing a job ethically (not misleading potential buyers, not "cooking the books," not short-changing suppliers, employees, the government, etc.)
