Statistically, why do girls generally do better...(cont)?

Why do girls do better in school than guys (statistically, I got this from my Psychology textbook), but more people view their fathers as smarter than their mothers? Out of all my friends, every one sees their dads as smarter than their moms, but most of us get better grades than the guys we know. why is this??
